My Little Citizens of the world are pretty worldly characters. They travel throughout the world (and sometimes beyond) in their imaginations, bringing back stories and treasures that they’ve discovered along the way.
Sometimes, those discoveries are a bit strange.
As a mom and a homeschooler, I’ve always encouraged my children to look at an issue – any issue – from both sides of the fence. Particularly when I hear one of my children making a bold statement about perhaps a moment in history or even a person of interest in the news, I remind them that we haven’t heard both stories. We haven’t heard the WHOLE story.
I believe that being a citizen of the world means taking people into consideration – their thoughts and feelings, their families, their history – not just what they see in front of them. It’s not what they have on their feet or the clothes that they wear.
I believe that my job, as mom and homeschooler, is to remind them AND myself of how important that is. Open their eyes and really SEE – not just go by what others say or do.
My little citizens of the world are working on it! I’ll bet yours are too!
Special thanks to http://www.teacollection.com and Twittermoms for inviting me to really think about what it means to be a Little Citizen of the World, and can I just say how adorable their children’s clothes are?!
